How to Print on Mugs

July 6th, 2009 · 2 Comments

For print some images on the surface of mugs, you need a mug press and mugs which are prepared for sublimation printings. As I mentioned before you need products which are made from or coated with polyester for sublimation printings. So you have to buy blank sublimable mugs from a supplier.

You can get clear images which are almost same as originals, if you follow the mug sublimation process correctly. The important points to get great result are;

  1. Cut the printed paper a little bit wider than the height of mug and try to cover the whole surface of mug with printed paper. If you don’t do this, you’ll sometime get unexpected lines on the mug at the area where the edges of print paper were placed. The vapor of sublimation ink deposited the edge of printed paper.
  2. After place the printed paper on the mug with heat tape, I recommend you to wrap with paper towel on the printed paper which are placed on the mug. Especially if the printed paper is not wide enough to cover the whole area of mug surface.
  3. And you have to wrap the mug with a rubber sheet then you can set it inside of the mug heat press. When set it, you should apply high pressure on the mug with heat press. If you didn’t apply enough pressure, you can’t get sharp image on the mug.
  4. You have to know the relationship between the applied temperature and heat pressing time of your heat press. When the temperature is too high, you can print quickly but you may not get clear image, if you don’t control the time precisely.
  5. After you take out the mug from mug press, you should submerge the mug in water for cooling down the temperature of the mug. If you don’t do this, you printed sharp image soon become blur image. Because the mug keeps high temperature for a while and the sublimation ink is easily transferred to the other area of the mug, if you don’t cool down the mug with water.

(This process is just for ceramic mugs so don’t apply to the glass mugs. If you put a heated glass mug into water, the mug would be easily broken down in pieces.)

These are important thing for the mug sublimation printing. But as I mentioned above, you can get clear image on mugs and they can be great personalized gift for any occasions. So try and enjoy mug heat press printing and create your original products.
