How can I save an image in vector format with photoshop?

Jeremy asked:

My friend and I are trying to make a simple design to print on a t-shirt. But we need to save the image in vector format. I looked a little online and wikipedia says we have to save it as an ".svg" file.
However, that's not one of the options on photoshop. Help?

That option is probably only avaliable in Adobe Illustrator :\ Photoshop is not a good program for vectors.

Although you can work with vector shapes in Photoshop, Photoshop itself is a pixel/raster based program. You cannot take an image created in Photoshop and just save it as a vector file. When you save the Photoshop image to one that can be printed, you would be flattening all your layers and rasterizing (converting to pixels) any vectors that you used. It’s the nature of Photoshop.

You would need Adobe Illustrator to truly create vector-based images. There is a free alternative, it’s called Inkscape. Here’s the link to the FAQ about Inkscape.

    Hope this helps.

    1. Why do you need to save it in a format that preserves its vector properties? Is the file going to be opened on another computer? Is your color mode CMYK? If we knew what you were going to do with it next, it would be easier to help you.

    2. Either “Save As” to ai format (Adobe Illustrator) or Export to ai format. Adobe doesn’t give you a lot of choices. But I know that projects can be switched from Photoshop to Illustrator and vice versa. For some printing you save as eps (encapsulated postscript) but eps is a pain.

    Good Luck!
